Another Charity Quilt Block Opportunity

The town of Bothell,WA had a major fire recently, and 17 businesses on Main Street were lost. Keepsake Cottage Fabrics is a quilt shop in Bothell that has asked for some red and white nine-patches, they use 2 1/2" squares. Unfinished blocks should be 6 1/2". We can mail them to:
Keepsake Cottage Fabrics
818 238th ST SE
Bothell, WA  98021

Or I can pick them up at Sew Day in Payson this Thursday.

If you'd like more information, Briawna @purplepoppyquilts has started a hashtag on Instagram, #quilts4mainst -- you can follow along with the progress there. These bad boys are SUPER quick and easy -- these two just took me about 10 minutes from start to finish -- starching included! :)

Charity Quilt Block Opportunity

Hello everyone!

We have another opportunity to donate a quilt block or two to a fellow guild. The Dallas Modern Quilt Guild and the Fort Worth Modern Quilt Guild have teamed up to help make quilts in honor of and for families and colleagues of the fallen officers in Dallas. They will also be sending support to the Baton Rouge Modern Quilt Guild.

If you would like to donate a block or two, you may make the 10 1/2" version of the heart block (LINKED HERE -- follow the 10 1/2" instructions) by Allison Harris. You may send it yourself to:
Lee Jenkins
C/O Sedona Salon
5930 Royal Lane, Suite F
Dallas, TX  75230

OR, you may bring it to our next guild meeting (August 20th!) and we will send on as many as we can collect. They are only asking for blocks at this point, so we don't need to worry about finishing these quilts.

If you have any further questions, the FWMQG listed all the pertinent information on their website HERE. They have a different address listed for a representative from their guild, but either one will work just fine, I'm just listing the one that goes to Dallas.

If you would like to check on the progress of these quilts, you may follow the Dallas Modern Quilt Guild on instagram @dallasmqg and the Fort Worth Modern Quilt Guild on their website, Fort Worth Modern Quilt Guild, or on instagram @fortworthmqg
-- you can also follow the hashtag #quiltsforpeace

Thank you all so much for your generous hearts! I know not everyone can donate to everything, but you have all been so generous in the past and it really touches my heart.

Fiesta Days Quilt Show - We Need Your Quilts!

Hi Everyone!
We've been invited by the organizers of the Fiesta Days Quilt Show in Spanish Fork to be their featured Guild this year.  How cool is that?
We are asking our members to bring a quilt or two or ten to display in the show.  We need between 20 and 30 quilts, so whatever you can share will be awesome!  There are even prizes for this show - $75 first prize and $50 second prize.  The show is one day only - July 25th in Spanish Fork.  Nebo Modern Quilt Guild members do not have to pay an entry fee (yay!).
For those of you who are willing to participate, we MUST have the quilts at our guild meeting on JULY 16th.  There will be paperwork to fill out at our guild meeting, for those who are bringing quilts.
If you are unable to make it, but still want to participate - let us know and we'll help you find someone to bring your quilt(s) for you.  Here is the information you will need to provide with your quilt(s):  Owner's name, City, Name of Quilt, Design/Pattern, Source of design or inspiration for the quilt, Pieced by, Quilted by, and Date of Construction/Completion.  You will also need to let us know which of the following applies to your quilt:  Hand Pieced, Hand Quilted, Hand Applique, Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted, Machine Applique.
You guys are awesome!  See you at our meeting on July 16th.
p.s. Don't forget to bring your QUILTS FOR PULSE blocks!  These are also due NO LATER than July 16th.  :)

June Meeting Recap

Here are the things we talked about at our June Guild Meeting:

Financial Report
-All guild members were sent an email with a link to our official financial report
-If you have any questions or concerns about it, contact Marion

Tips and Tricks
-Sharon showed us how she writes numbers on her pins with a sharpie and then uses them to keep track of rows, stacks, etc.

Charity
-This month we finished two quilts, with lots of quilts only needing binding
-We are making an effort to donate our quilts to more charities that are local to us, including Utah Valley and Mountain View Hospitals, and the Women's Shelter in Provo
-Our guild would like to donate a quilt to the victims of the recent shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando.  For more info, look a few blog posts back.  :)

Challenge: Words of Art
-Create letters or words with fabric
-Turn it into a FINISHED project
-Due at September guild meeting

Presentation
-Sonia did an amazing job showing us techniques for making improv letters.  Most of her ideas and techniques came from the book Word Play Quilts by Tonya Ricucci.
-These are the four techniques she covered:  1. Add on,  2. Cut and insert,  3. Add corner triangles,  4. Duplicate an angle

Quilts for Pulse

As a guild, we have decided to make two quilts for the Orlando Modern Quilt Guild, who will be donating them to the victims and families of victims from the Pulse night club shooting. We will donate our Rainbow Log Cabin Quilt, and a new quilt that is based on the heart block from Allison Harris from Cluck Cluck Sew. If you would like to donate a quilt of your own, please see THIS POST and THIS POST from the OMQG.

The block size we are using for the heart quilt will be 8 1/2" square. That will give us enough room to do a fun sashing and cornerstones -- Natalie has that all covered!

Here are the instructions, changed a bit to reflect our size (but almost all of it comes from Allison Harris):

CUTTING
*please use a solid background COLOR (not white or black) and ANY COLOR print (EXCEPT black, can be pieced if desired)
  • PRINT fabric: TWO 4 ½” x 8 ½”
  • BACKGROUND fabric: FOUR 1 ½” squares, TWO 4 ½” squares

PIECING

1.     Draw a diagonal line on each of the 4 ½” BACKGROUND squares.  Place a square at the bottom of each 4 ½” x 8 ½” PRINT strip.

2.     Sew along the drawn line.  Trim the corner leaving ¼”, and press seams open.

3.     Draw a diagonal line on each of the 1 ½” BACKGROUND squares. Place a square in each top corner of the PRINT strips.  Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner.

4.     Sew along the drawn line.  Trim corners leaving ¼”, and press seams open.

5.     Pin seams and sew the two sides together.  Press seam open. Your block should now measure 8 ½”.

If you would like to see the tutorial with pictures, you may find it HERE -- just remember that the sizes will vary from our size.

Rainbow Fat Eighth Swap

Hello again everyone!

I'm so excited about the response we got for our rainbow mini swap! In case you weren't able to make it to the meeting, we are exchanging fat eighths NEXT MONTH, so if you want to participate I need to know by FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 26.

The swap will go like this: you pick a color (they will be listed at the bottom of the page), and buy ONE yard high-quality quilting cotton of that color, then cut it into fat eighths, as described in the attachment (which also has this info -- sorry!); each fat eighth will be approx. 9" x 21". At the time of the swap, we will exchange fabrics within each group of 8, so everyone will go home with one fat eighth of each color.

PLEASE DO NOT BUY OR CUT INTO ANY FABRIC UNLESS YOU HEAR FROM ME! I would hate for someone to cut into their fabric, only to find that the group they signed up for isn't going to actually have enough people to complete the group!  (If you've signed up at the Guild meeting, those groups will all happen except possibly not Group #8 -- depending on the response we get to this email.)  I will send out all Group assignments on Friday next week, and then you will know which group you are approved for. :)

If you still want to participate, I will make these groups on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you want to sign up for more than one group (e.g., to join 2 groups for 16 different cuts of fabric), you may at this point, but please join DIFFERENT groups and sign up for DIFFERENT colors. We may not have enough interest in all 10 groups, so if that's the case I'll work it out next Friday.

And one more thing... I'm sorry, but you MUST be a member of the guild, with dues paid, to participate in the swap. Our esteemed secretary will be checking, so please get your dues in if you want to join in the fun!!

The colors that are available are:

Group #7 -- yellow
Group #7 -- blue
Group #7 -- purple

Group #8 -- red
Group #8 -- pink

Group #9 (if there's interest)
all colors -- red, pink, orange, yellow, blue, aqua, green, purple

Group #10 (if there's interest)
all colors -- red, pink, orange, yellow, blue, aqua, green, purple

I'm so excited -- I already cut into some hoarded B&C aqua for my slot in Group #5!
