Quilting Along
If you would like to participate, but the kits are gone by the time they come to you, or you can't make it to guild meeting, or you just know a veteran that would appreciate a Quilt of Valor, you can still Quilt Along with us! We will post the block instructions on this page each month, with finishing instructions available in June.

Block #1: Pinwheel Star
PROVIDED: Star background (WHITE):
(8) 4 ½” squares (star points)
(2) 5” squares (pinwheel background)
YOU WILL PROVIDE:
True background (BLUE):
(4) 4 ½” squares
(4) 4 ½” x 8 ½”
Pinwheel points (RED)
(2) 5” squares
ASSEMBLING THE BLOCK
1. PINWHEELS: Mark a line diagonally on the wrong side of both white 5” squares. Place one white square RST with a red 5” squares, and sew ¼” away from each side of the line; repeat for second pair. Cut along the marked diagonal lines; press. Trim to 4 ½” squares.
2. FLYING GEESE: Mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of each white 2 ½” square. Place one white square in the corner of a blue 4 ½” x 8 ½” piece, and sew on the line; press and trim ¼” to the outside of the marked line. Place a second white square in the opposite corner, making sure the diagonal line will intersect the point; sew on the line; trim ¼” to the outside of the marked line and press well. Repeat for all flying geese blocks (4 total).
3. FINAL ASSEMBLY: For the top row, sew one 4 ½” blue square to either side of the flying geese unit. Repeat for the bottom row. For the center, sew one flying geese unit to either side of the pinwheel center. Press rows so seams will nest, then sew rows together.
Block #2: Flag Star
CUTTING OUT
PROVIDED: Background (WHITE):
(1) 2 ½” x 4 ½” (flag)
(1) 2 ½” x 8 ½” (flag)
(4) 4 ½” squares (corners)
(4) 4 ½” x 8 ½” (flying geese)
Flag corner (NAVY): (1) 4 ½” square
YOU WILL PROVIDE:
Star points (BLUE):
(8) 4 ½” squares
Flag stripes (RED):
(1) 2 ½” x 4 ½”
(1) 2 ½” x 8 ½:
ASSEMBLING THE BLOCK
1. FLAG: Sew the red and white stripes together; press. Then sew the 4 ½”-wide section to the navy square; press. Sew the bottom portion to the flag and press well.
2. FLYING GEESE: Mark a diagonal on the wrong side of each outside star point. Place one star point fabric in the corner of a white 4 ½” x 8 ½” piece, and sew on the line; press and trim ¼” to the outside of the marked line. Repeat for 4 total. Place a second outside star point in the opposite corner, making sure the diagonal line will intersect the point; sew on the line; trim ¼” to the outside of the marked line and press well. Repeat for all flying geese blocks.
3. ASSEMBLY: For the top row, sew one 4 ½” white square to either side of the flying geese unit. Repeat for the bottom row. For the center, sew one flying geese unit to either side of the checkerboard center. Press rows so seams will nest, then sew rows together.
4. STAR: Using your favorite method of applique, use a 3 ½” (or smaller) template to applique a star on the navy blue corner of the flag.

Block #4: Puss in the Corner Star

YOU WILL PROVIDE:
Background (RED):
(4) 4 ½” squares
(4) 4 ½” x 8 ½”
Center (LIGHTER BLUE):
(4) 2 ½” x 4 ½”
ASSEMBLING THE BLOCK
1. FLYING GEESE: Mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of each white 4 ½” square. Place one white square in the corner of a red 4 ½” x 8 ½” piece, and sew on the line; press and trim ¼” to the outside of the marked line. Place a second white square in the opposite corner, making sure the diagonal line will intersect the point; sew on the line; trim ¼” to the outside of the marked line and press well. Repeat for all flying geese blocks (4 total).
2. PUSS IN THE CORNER: For top of center block, sew one navy 2 ½” square to either side of the lighter blue 2 ½” x 4 ½” unit; press towards navy. Repeat for bottom of center block. For center of center block, sew a lighter blue 2 ½” x 4 ½” unit to either side of navy 4 ½” square. Sew rows together and press well.
3. FINAL ASSEMBLY: For top of block, sew one red 4 ½” square to either side of a flying geese unit; press. Repeat for bottom of block. For center of block, sew one flying geese unit to either side of Puss in the Corner block; press. Sew rows together and press well.
Block #5: Friendship Stars & Stripes
CUTTING OUT
PROVIDED:
Star (white):
(1) 2 ½” square
(2) 3” squares
Stripes (white):
(1) 2 ½” x 10 ½”
(2) 2 ½” x 16 ½”
YOU WILL PROVIDE:
Star (blue):
(4) 2 ½” squares
(2) 3” squares
Stripes (red):
(2) 2 ½” x 10 ½”
(2) 2 ½” x 16 ½”
1. STAR: Mark a line diagonally on the wrong side of both white 2 ½” squares. Place one white square RST with a blue 3” square, and sew ¼” away from each side of the line; repeat for second pair. Cut along the marked diagonal lines; press. Trim to 2 ½”. Sew together to form the friendship star, as seen in picture above.
2. TOP STRIPES: Sew one red 2 ½” x 10 ½” strip to either side of one white 2 ½” x 10 ½” strip; press. Sew star part to the left side; press.
3. BOTTOM STRIPES: Sew stripes alternating white/red/white/red; press.
4. FINAL ASSEMBLY: Sew top stripes to bottom stripes, making sure to align the blue star portion at the top left of the block, and the red stripes at the top and bottom of the block.
* This block will be 14 ½” tall and 16 ½” wide. *
Block #6: Applique Stars & Stripes
CUTTING OUT
PROVIDED:
Stripes (white):
(1) 2 ½” x 10 ½”
(2) 2 ½” x 16 ½”
YOU WILL PROVIDE:
Star (blue):
(1) 7” square
blue or white fabric for applique star
Stripes (red):
(2) 2 ½” x 10 ½”
(2) 2 ½” x 16 ½”
1 . STAR: Using your favorite method of applique, use a 5 ½” (or smaller) template to applique a star on the blue 7” square. Trim unit to 6 ½” square.
2. TOP STRIPES: Sew one red 2 ½” x 10 ½” strip to either side of one white 2 ½” x 10 ½” strip; press. Sew star part to the left side; press.
3. BOTTOM STRIPES: Sew stripes alternating white/red/white/red; press.
4. FINAL ASSEMBLY: Sew top stripes to bottom stripes, making sure to align the blue star portion at the top left of the block, and the red stripes at the top and bottom of the block.
* This block will be 14 ½” tall and 16 ½” wide. *
