October Meeting Announcements

Hi everyone!
For those who weren't able to make it to our October meeting - here are some of the important announcements we went over:

  • Sew Day: October Sew day is on the 26th (the last Thursday of the month, as usual)
    • November Sew day will be 11/16 (2nd Thursday of the month)
    • December Sew day will be 12/7 (1st Thursday of the month)
    • Usually we have Sew day on the last Thursday of the month, except for November and December, which we move because of the holidays.
  • Charity Quilts:  If you took home a Quilts of Valor quilt to finish, they are due back at our NOVEMBER meeting (11/18). We will be showing all of our finished quilts before sending them off to the Veterans Home in Payson.
  • New President and President Elect Nominations:  Next month we will be nominating new a new President and President Elect for the 2018 Calendar year.  Be thinking of someone you would like to nominate (even if it is yourself).  Our beloved president Emily will be stepping down at the end of the year.  :(
  • UFOs: November is our FINAL UFO month of the year!  Check the tab on this blog if you need a reminder about what you signed up to finish!  This is a meeting you won't want to miss - there are always amazing prizes!
  • 2018 Membership: Dues for next year will be due at the end of December, so it's not too early to get them paid!  The cost is $35 and you can pay by check or cash at our next meeting, or through the PayPal link in the sidebar of this blog.
We had some amazing bags shared with us today!  Check our Instagram feed for photos!

See you next month!

January 2017 Meeting Recap

Hi Friends!  We loved seeing you all at our meeting last weekend!  For those of you who couldn't make it (that was a crazy snowstorm!), we missed you!

Here's what went down:

Announcements:

-All guild friends are invited to Sew Day on the last Thursday of every month (our next Sew Day is February 26th).  We generally sew from 10 am to 10 pm.  Stop in whenever you can and bring your own projects!  If you need the address, leave a comment on this blog post and we'll get back to you.  :)

-Charity Quilts.  This year we will be making "Quilt of Valor" quilts for the Veteran's Hospital in Payson. Check out our "Charity Quilts" and "2017 Quilts of Valor" tabs at the very top of this blog for more information.

-Our new challenge this year is Optical Illusions!  Check out our previous blog post (or just click HERE) for more information.

-No new swaps yet - come back in February to find out what our next swap will be!

-We are continuing our UFO challenge in 2017.  Check out our "UFO Challenge" tab at the top of this blog for the rules.  We handed out a notebook for everyone to sign up for the UFO challenge during the meeting and all of those projects have been typed up under this tab - just in case you forget what you signed up for.  If you didn't get a chance to sign up, you can still sign up next month, or leave a quick comment on this blog post and we'll get you signed up.  :)

April Rosenthal gave a fabulous trunk show and shared many many of her amazing quilts designed by her and including her own fabric lines.  Thank you April!  We love you!

June Meeting Recap

Here are the things we talked about at our June Guild Meeting:

Financial Report
-All guild members were sent an email with a link to our official financial report
-If you have any questions or concerns about it, contact Marion

Tips and Tricks
-Sharon showed us how she writes numbers on her pins with a sharpie and then uses them to keep track of rows, stacks, etc.

Charity
-This month we finished two quilts, with lots of quilts only needing binding
-We are making an effort to donate our quilts to more charities that are local to us, including Utah Valley and Mountain View Hospitals, and the Women's Shelter in Provo
-Our guild would like to donate a quilt to the victims of the recent shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando.  For more info, look a few blog posts back.  :)

Challenge: Words of Art
-Create letters or words with fabric
-Turn it into a FINISHED project
-Due at September guild meeting

Presentation
-Sonia did an amazing job showing us techniques for making improv letters.  Most of her ideas and techniques came from the book Word Play Quilts by Tonya Ricucci.
-These are the four techniques she covered:  1. Add on,  2. Cut and insert,  3. Add corner triangles,  4. Duplicate an angle

Simple Fun & Easy Holiday Gifts Links

Quilted Coasters, Natalie Smith

  1. Make patchwork as desired. Quilt using just patchwork and batting. Trim patchwork to 5 ½" square.
  2. Trim another piece of fabric to 5 ½" square for backing.
  3. Place backing fabric on top of patchwork, right sides together. Sew around perimeter, using a ¼" seam allowance and leaving a               3" opening on one side.
  4. Trim corners and turn, then press well and top stitch around, making sure to enclose opening.
